What is an Area Health Education Center (AHEC)?

AHEC is a state and federally funded grant program that provides services to address the shortages of healthcare workers in medically underserved areas.

When were AHECs created?

AHEC programs were established in 1970 as a result of the Carnegie Commission’s Report on Higher Education by Congress.

How many AHECs operate in Texas?

There are three active programs in Texas. East Texas AHEC- serving 111 counties, West Texas AHEC - serving 87 counties, South Texas AHEC - serving 38 counties

How do AHECs operate?

AHECs are sponsored by School of Medicine/Osteopathy or their parent institution. The East Texas AHEC program is directed by the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. The local centers are guided by local boards in accordance to their contracts.

What does an AHEC do?

AHECs are community-based programs that work to attract and retain more healthcare workers.

How does AHEC work with communities?

AHECs are community-driven programs. AHEC staff and volunteer board members work together to assess and identify the regional needs and priorities for program development.

What is Pecan Valley AHEC?

Pecan Valley AHEC is one of nine regional centers in East Texas AHEC and is based at The Victoria College, which serves as the host organization. Pecan Valley AHEC provides programming in fourteen counties.

Does Pecan Valley AHEC charge a fee for services?

AHEC is a non-profit organization. We provide virtually all services at no cost to the public, with the exception of a minimal fee for the Health Careers Summer Camps.

I want to learn more about health careers, how can AHEC help?

Pecan Valley AHEC can help guide students into exploring a career in the medical field. Informational materials including a health career exploration guide called ‘Hot Jobs” can be mailed or individuals may choose to set up an appointment with an AHEC representative.

How does Pecan Valley AHEC support local health practitioners?

Pecan Valley AHEC and our community partners provide a series of continuing education programs each year to help healthcare workers meet their educational needs.
