The second annual Nurse Academy designed specifically for seventh and eighth grade students was held on Friday May 9, 2008. The Nurse Academy was developed in partnership by Pecan Valley Area Health Education Center, The Victoria College, The University of Houston-Victoria, Citizens Medical Center and DeTar Healthcare System.
The goal of the Nurse Academy is to expose students with an interest in nursing to the degree programs offered locally by The Victoria College and The University of Houston-Victoria. Students were introduced to these opportunities through the use of hands on, interactive programs throughout the day. Activities ranged from learning to take blood pressure, administer injections, starting IV drips, hear and reflex testing to learning about infants in the nursery and hearing heart sounds on a computer simulated patient to name a few! The students spent the day with the faculty, staff and nurses with various backgrounds and areas of expertise. They had the opportunity to learn what it takes to be a nurse from the beginning of the dream to the reality of the job. As always, the importance of hardwork and good study habits in the area of math and science were emphasized throughout the day.
Nineteen students were selected to attend The Nurse Academy by an application process which was open to all Victoria public and private school seventh and eighth grade students.
Keep your ears and eyes open for another Nurse Academy coming soon to an area near you!
